I hope one of the benefits of learning Baptist history is that I become rooted and grounded in the soil of scripture. The Bible is what makes us Baptist and there is no such thing as one becoming a Baptist without the Bible. I know if we are authentically biblical, then we will be thoroughly Baptist. I would like to look at a great passage of scripture that strongly describes Protestant churches and their beginnings. I think history’s light intensifies this scripture.
Revelation 17:1-2 “And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:
2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”
Whoever this whore is she is great. This whore sits upon many waters because the reach of its realm extends into many nations. The fact that the kings of the earth have committed fornication with this whore shows that it is a “state-church” combination. It is a false religion that
